Metallurgy
The metallurgy industry, as the name connotes, is focused on metal working activities such as metal purification, material enhancement (e.g. hardening and strengthening), and forming. It consists of a number applications requiring vacuum. These include vacuum heat treating, vacuum brazing, carburizing, Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM), Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR) and sintering.
These processes are heavily reliant on large roughing pumps, typically rotary piston pumps, along with large blowers. Due the maturity of the industry, diffusion pumps are still almost exclusively used to provide high vacuum, and these are usually backed by small rotary vane pumps.
